India hands over Jayanagar-Kurtha railway section

Kathmandu, 23 October: India on Friday handed over a 35-kilometre-long railway line from Kurta in Nepal to Jayanagar in India in the presence of the Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Construction Renu Yadav and Indian ambassador Vinaya Mohan Kwatra. Along with the handover of the railway line to Nepal, one among the many obstacles in operation of the railway service has been over, said the Railway Department spokesman. The inland railway line has now come under the ownership of Nepal at a time when Nepal was unable to operate the railway in this section for more than a year.
A section of the 69 km railway line under construction from Jayanagar to Bardibas via Janakpur in Nepal has been handed over. The railway line is being constructed with the financial and technical assistance of the Government of India.
The Government of India has committed a grant of Rs. 8.77 billion for the construction of the entire section, BBC has reported.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said in a tweet, “This railway passing through the historic city of Janakpur will further deepen the people-to-people ties between India and Nepal.”
