IFRC warns: Future of Nepal Red Cross Society at risk

Kathmandu, Aug 29. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has said that the future of the Nepal Red Cross Society is at risk. IFRC’s Compliance and Mediation Committee Chair, Kristina Kumpula, expressed concern in a letter sent to the Nepal Red Cross on Thursday.

Kumpula wrote that she was disappointed by the writ petition filed in court by suspended former president Sudarshan Nepal. IFRC had earlier suspended Sudarshan Nepal along with three others, objecting to political party-based power sharing in the ad hoc committee.

The current government had formed a nine-member ad hoc committee led by Binod Sharma, against which Nepal’s faction filed a petition at the Supreme Court. The case is still under consideration.

“We are very disappointed to hear that a member of one of the earlier committees involved in the dispute has registered a petition at the Supreme Court challenging the decision to form a new ad hoc committee,” the letter stated.

The IFRC noted that the situation has caused significant harm to the reputation and resources of the Nepal Red Cross Society. It said that filing a court case against the government’s decision is a setback to the humanitarian mission of the organization.

The letter urged the concerned parties to withdraw the case, stressing that the future of the Nepal Red Cross should be prioritized over political or personal interests.
