Kathmandu, Aug 29: The government has appointed Chandrakuber Khapung as the new Inspector General of Nepal Police. A minister said Friday’s cabinet meeting decided to appoint him with effect from September 4.
Current IGP Deepak Thapa will retire at midnight on September 3. Since Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is leaving for China on Saturday, the cabinet meeting was held earlier to finalize the 32nd IGP of Nepal Police.
Khapung is currently the chief of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). He and the outgoing IGP Thapa had applied for the post of inspector at the same time.
Their batch of inspectors was recruited in three phases. In the first phase, on March 18, 1995, 53 officers were appointed. Among them, Basant Bahadur Kunwar later became IGP but retired on March 18, 2025, after completing 30 years of service.
In the second phase, on September 4, 1995, officers were appointed, and from that group, Thapa became IGP, edging out Sudeep Giri and Tek Bahadur Tamang. Since Thapa is also retiring on September 3, Khapung, appointed in the third phase, emerged as the sole candidate.
From Khapung’s own group, Lalmani Acharya already retired on May 23 due to the mandatory retirement age of 56 for Additional Inspectors General (AIGs). Another officer from the same batch, AIG Krishnahari Sharma Pokharel, who currently heads the Administration Department, will also retire on September 1 for the same reason.
With his batchmates retiring, Khapung was left as the only contender. If a new police law is issued during his tenure, he could get a six-month extension. Otherwise, he will also retire after completing 30 years of service, effective midnight, November 11.
