
Kathmandu, July 2: The Nepali Congress and UML leaders reached the President’s Office, Sittal Niwas, at midnight on July 1, following a series of meetings, to ink an agreement for the formation of the new coalition government in association with the two largest parties, NC and UML.
President Ramchandra Paudel was a witness while signing the agreement.
According to Ramesh Lekhak, NC leader, the first half tenure, i.e., one-year and nine-month period, will be led by K.P. Sharma Oli, whereas, the second tenure will be led by Sher Bahadur Deuba. Deuba will have the opportunity to hold the next three levels of elections.
The NC and UML also decided to share the ministerial position.
The agreement also includes amendments to the constitution by changing the election procedure.
NC will get ten ministerial portfolios, including the home ministry, whereas UML will get nine ministerial portfolios, including the finance ministry.
Also, UML will lead three provinces, and NC will lead four provinces.
Both parties also agreed to amend the constitution to increase the number of local bodies and reduce the number of provincial organs.
Details about the agreement have not been disclosed. Both the sides have kept secret the agreement.
