
Kathmandu, May 20: Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha has remarked that Tibet and Taiwan are the inspirable parts of China, saying that Nepal is firmly committed to the one-China principle.
Addressing a seminar on Nepal-China relations, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shrestha remarked that both countries enjoy excellent and cordial relations by strengthening friendly ties.
Shrestha, speaking at the seminar on “Review of Friendship since the Establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal and move forward together for a better future” organized by Nepal-China Friendship Forum on May 19 in Kathmandu, recalled the high-level exchange visits and signing of important agreements, including Nepal joining the BRI.
Shrestha recalled the bilateral relations based on five principles of peaceful co-existence and cooperation.
Shrestha expressed the commitment to the implementation of the BRI soon.
Chinese Ambassador, Chen Song, in his inaugural address of the seminar, said that this year is important for China as it is observing the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. He also informed that next year, 2075 is a very important year for both countries as they mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In 1955, Nepal and China established diplomatic relations.
Ambassador Chen expressed satisfaction with Nepal’s strong commitment to the one-China principle.
The Chinese envoy also recalled the UN Charter on the one-China principle and Taiwan as an inspirable part of China.
The Ambassador retreated the Chinese commitment to respecting Nepal’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.
The envoy recalled that China is the largest foreign investor in Nepal and also the largest trading partner of Nepal and said that China has reopened 14 trade passes between Nepal and China’s borders.
Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, former chairman of the National Assembly, remarked that China has been keen to contribute to Nepal’s infrastructural development. Therefore, Timilsina suggested all the political parties develop a consensus on moving forward with infrastructural development projects under BRI without any delay.
C.P. Mainali, General Secretary, CPN (MC), remarked that Chinese cooperation and presence are related to strengthening Nepali sovereignty.
Similarly, NC leader Sujata Koirala, Maoist Center leader Dev Gurung, Ekekrit Smajwadi Party leader Pramesh Hamal, UML leader Dr Rajan Bhattarai, RPP leader Sagun S Lawati, and RSP leader Dr Bikram Timalsina addressed the seminar.
From the Nepal-China bilateral organizations, Kishor Shrestha of the Nepal-China Media forum, Dr Saroj Dhital of the Fudan Alumni, Aananda Prasad Pokhrel of the Trans-Himalayan Friendship Association, Mohan Lohani of the China Study Center, Shankar Pandey of the Nepal-China Executive council, Deepak Sharkar of the World Culture Net, Dr Harish Chandra Shah of the Nepal-China Cultural and Educational Council and Dr Urmila Shakya of the Araniko Society addressed the seminar.
They lauded the significance of BRI, GDI, GCI, and GSI for the infrastructural development of Nepal and urged for immediate implementation of the projects under BRI.
“No external powers can harm Nepal-China bilateral relations”, the speakers expressed their confidence.
The speakers also urged the government to optimum utilization of the trade and transportation agreements signed between Nepal and China. Also, they suggested importing petroleum products via China.
They also opined to grasp the benefits of China’s development.
