The 299th Prithvi Jayanti was observed across the country on Monday by organising various programmes.

Although the government did not give public holiday in memory of the unifier of Nepal, both President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli issued their messages on the occasion.

While the President issued a formal notice, the Prime Minister simply tweeted his greetings. In the past, after the 2006 political change, the President and Prime Minister had stopped issuing a message on Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day.

Former King Gyanendra also issued a message expressing his worry about the worsening situation in Nepal.

A big crowd gathered in front of Singh Durbar to mark the Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day by paying tribute to King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal. Police had to charge baton to disperse the crowd.

Actress Manisha Koirala, leaders of Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and commoners in large numbers reached Singh Durbar eastern gate where the life-size statue of King Prithvi Narayan Shah stands.

On the occasion, Nepal Army organised the Unification March from Gorkha to Kathmandu following the trail through which the army of King Prithvi Narayan Shah arrived in Kathmandu to conquer the valley.

Separate events were also organised in Gorkha by the ruling Nepal Communist Party and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party. In the NCP-organised programme, Ashok Kumar Gurung, chief of District Coordination Committee said, “Modern Nepal was formed on the basis of the message of unity given by King Prithvi Narayan Shah across the nation. Now, the time has come for all of us to unite for the prosperity and development of the nation.”

The Gorkha Municipality, along with other four local units of the district had also announced a public holiday to mark the occasion.
