Loktantra becomes tool to serve personal interests

Loktantra becomes tool to serve personal interests

By Our Reporter

It has been 14 years since Nepal became a republic democracy by overthrowing the monarchy. But over the years, leaders of the political parties exploited Loktantra to fulfill their petty interests, which often invited a chaotic situation in Nepal.

The latest rift in the ruling Nepal Communist Party also arose first mainly because of unethical desire of leader Bam Dev Gautam to become a member of the House of Representatives forgetting that he was rejected by voters in 2017. He even instigated the party leaders to amend the Constitution paving the way for the National Assembly member to become Prime Minister of the country. His move grew enmity among the party leaders with one faction backing Gautam to achieve his desire and another resisting it. This ultimately caused a crack in the communist party, which was buried two months ago with timely interference from the Chinese ambassador to Nepal.

Now again when Pushpa Kamal Dahal started dreaming to become PM again, Madhav Nepal to pull down his archrival KP Sharma Oli from the post of the PM and Jhalanath Khanal to become the President, the leaders of the ruling parties have ganged up to oust and retain PM Oli at a time when people have been living in constant fear of coronavirus, locusts and floods and landslide. Had the communists really been for people, they would not have resorted to the power-centric brawl at this time of crisis.

The escalating dispute in the ruling party culminated in an abrupt ending of the Budget session without deciding on crucial Bills like the Citizenship Bill and Civil Servant Bill.

PM Oli prorogued the session in haste to avoid possible registration of no-trust motion against him. Although the House this time approved the amendment of Constitution to insert the updated map of Nepal unanimously, it was prevented from doing its businesses after the dispute flared in NCP as the leaders turned the sovereign house into a tool to save their chairs.

When NCP leaders are showing unwanted drama, the Nepali Congress and other opposition parties have also failed to prevent the House from becoming a tool for the disputing leaders of the Nepal Communist Party.
