Two dozen hotels damaged, estimated loss at Rs. 25 billion

KATHMANDU, Sept 12: Hotel Association Nepal has reported that two dozen hotels were damaged during the Gen Z movement. In its statement, the association said that well-known domestic and international hotel brands operating in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairahawa, Jhapa, Morang-Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Mahottari, and Dang-Tulsipur suffered vandalism, arson, and looting.

Hilton Hotel in Kathmandu alone suffered damage worth over NPR 8 billion. The association’s preliminary estimate suggests that the total economic loss across the country exceeds NPR 25 billion. It stated that affected hotels cannot resume operations without repair and reconstruction, leaving over 2,000 workers’ jobs disrupted.

“These hotels, whose operations are currently halted, are unlikely to meet their financial obligations to banks and other institutions,” the statement read.

The association has demanded a powerful judicial committee to investigate the massive destruction of private sector investments and assets, including those of public limited companies. It also urged the government to provide a financial relief package for reconstruction and repair and ensure fair compensation and punishment for those responsible.

“To maintain investor confidence, achieve economic stability and prosperity, and move forward together in developing tourism in this new era of change, Hotel Association Nepal makes this appeal,” the statement concluded.
