Rumours have it that the second-generation leaders of the ruling Nepali Congress and the main opposition CPN (UML) have been holding one meeting after another to topple the present Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government.
It is also evident from the fact that Prime Minister Dahal and Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba have started reiterating that the present coalition would last the full term of the new House of Representatives.
While PM Dahal at a function organised in Gajuri of Dhading on Monday said that the current government would remain intact for five years, Deuba immediately after he returned to Kathmandu from Singapore said that the present coalition would continue.
Obviously, the two leaders made the comments when the public was suspicious about the continuity of the present government. The two made the assertion only to convince the public that there would not be any change in the government.
It is widely believed that the youth leaders of NC are not happy with the way the government is now functioning and the performance of the party leadership and have reportedly started consulting with the UML leaders. Again, the chairman of the CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has a single goal—to pull down the government at any cost. And if Oli offered the post of the PM for a full term to Deuba, the latter would be ready to end the coalition.
However, Deuba seems not ready to deceive Dahal this time fearing the repetition of the incident of December 25, 2022, when Dahal who was denied the post of the PM by Deuba reached Balkot and became the PM in the backing of the UML.
It is also said that Deuba met representatives of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the Indian intelligence, during his stay in Singapore and they suggested continuing the present coalition because India does not want to see the return of Oli in power in Kathmandu.
No matter whether the government is pulled down or not this time, the country is sure to reel under political instability, and sooner or later the UML and NC leaders will come together to avert such instability and improve their deteriorating public base because of the emergence of Rastriya Swatantra Party.
