Lalita Niwas episode: Big fishes being saved

By Our Reporter

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority seems to be saving the powerful politicians involved in the Lalita Niwas land scam as the anti-graft body filed cases to the weaker individuals leaving the powerful politicians, who had taken policy-level decisions to hand over the government land in the name of individuals.

The CIAA has filed cases against those who purchased the land, the employees of the land revenues offices involved registering the land but left UML leader Bishnu Paudel who had also purchased the land, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai who were Prime Minister when decisions to allow to sell the land were made.

Earlier, the KP Ole-led government targeted only Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar who was minister when the policy level decision was made on the controversial land, giving protection to others. Still, the situation has not been different.

Meanwhile, the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) filed a case against the accused of the Lalita Niwas land scam at the Patan High Court, Lalitpur on Tuesday.

The case is filed against Shova Kanta Dhakal, Saroj Dhakal, Uma Kumari Dhakal, Santu Shrestha and Rajeswor Shrestha. The Dhakals and Santu are the proprietors of the Ansan International Pvt. Ltd while Rajeshwor is an auditor.

The DRI has accused them of faking the Value Added Tax, presenting the fake financial statement and other reports to evade taxes.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DRI put the tax misappropriation at Rs. 422 million in VAT, Rs. 684 million in income tax and Rs. 97.4 million in dividends.

The DRI has sought to retrieve Rs. 1.2 billion from the accused and also charge to fine them Rs. 1.2 billion, making the total fine and punishment Rs. 2.4 billion.

The accused have created fake documents and financial reports to evade taxes, said the DRI.
