Kathmandu, March 22: Newly elected members of the House of Representatives will begin receiving salaries and benefits from the day they take the oath of office.
The Federal Parliament Secretariat has already issued a public notice calling lawmakers to attend the swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for Thursday at 2 pm, March 26, at the multipurpose hall of the under-construction Federal Parliament building in Singha Durbar. Payments and facilities will take effect the same day, as per the law.
Nepal’s House of Representatives has 275 members, with 165 elected through the first-past-the-post system and 110 through proportional representation.
Under the Remuneration and Facilities Act 2016, lawmakers are entitled to travel expenses when they arrive in Kathmandu for the first time after election, upon submission of tickets. They also receive housing and furniture support. Each lawmaker is provided Rs 15,000 for furniture, and those without a house in Kathmandu Valley get a monthly rent allowance of Rs 18,000.
Monthly salary for a lawmaker is set at Rs 55,230. In addition, they receive Rs 3,000 for communication expenses and Rs 2,000 for utilities such as electricity and water. A special allowance of Rs 1,000 is also provided.
Lawmakers are entitled to meeting allowances. They receive Rs 1,000 per day for attending parliamentary or committee meetings, along with an additional Rs 1,000 for transport. If Parliament meets for 15 days in a month, this alone amounts to Rs 30,000 in extra payments.
Members without official transport are eligible for travel expenses for attending meetings of either House, committees, or joint sessions. During official visits inside or outside Nepal, lawmakers receive a daily allowance of Rs 2,500.
The law also provides for compensation in case a lawmaker dies, resigns, or loses office before completing their term. In such cases, they or their beneficiaries are entitled to an additional one month’s salary beyond what is due. If no nominee is specified or the nominee is no longer alive, the amount is paid to the closest legal heir.
