Kathmandu, August 29: Construction of the country’s first modern tunnel highway—Sisnekhola Tunnel—is in the final stage and is being prepared to be operational in the near future.

Prabhat Kumar Jha, spokesperson of the Roads Department, said that the entire construction of the Nagdhanga-Sisnekhola Tunnel Project would be completed within six months. So far, the physical progress of the project is 94.5 percent.

The spokesman informed that the Council of Ministers has approved the rate of the service toll for vehicles using the tunnel. He said that it has been decided to take service toll for the operation drive with the aim of sustainably managing the resources necessary for the maintenance and operation of the tunnel in the coming days.
He informed that it has been decided to implement the ‘RFID-based toll collection’ system for collecting fees from tunnel users and that the system is being installed. With the use of this system, toll payments can be made directly through the bank account linked RFID track affixed on the windshield of the vehicle.

He informed that ‘specifications’ and ‘manuals’ have been prepared and approved by the Japanese consultant to provide round-the-clock service for tunnel operation, management and maintenance, rescue work in case of emergency, fire control in case of fire and regular operation, monitoring and maintenance of high-tech systems including power supply, lighting, ventilation, internal communication, remote monitoring, fire-fighting, emergency facilities connected to the tunnel.
