Kathmandu, Aug 16: Hindus across Nepal are observing Shree Krishna Janmashtami today, honoring the birth of Lord Krishna with devotion and a range of religious programs. According to scriptures, Lord Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Ashtami during the Dwapar era.
The festival celebrates Krishna’s virtuous deeds, believed to bring happiness and prosperity. Born to Basudev and Devaki and held captive by King Kansha in Mathura, Lord Krishna guided humanity toward knowledge, truth, and immortality. He is fondly called “Gopal” for caring for cows and “Manmohan” for the enchanting melodies of his flute.
Temples across the country, including the Shree Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Lalitpur, Nawatandham in Kageswori Manohara-8, Gothatar, the ISKCON premises, Budhanilakantha, and Pashupatinath Temple, have drawn large crowds of devotees. The stone-built Mangal Bazaar temple was constructed by Patan’s King Siddhi Narsingh Malla and is renowned for its artistry.
Religious organizations mark the occasion with vibrant processions, showcasing idols of Lord Krishna surrounded by decorative portraits. Devotees spend the night chanting prayers, singing devotional songs, dancing, and lighting oil lamps in celebration.
