Pro-monarchy groups demand effective monitoring from human rights groups on their peaceful demonstration starting from May 29

Kathmandu, May 24: The pro-monarchy groups, which have scheduled to launch a decisive movement from May 29 for restoration of the institution of monarchy, had asked the human rights groups for effective monitoring. Viewing the government’s attitude of massively suppressing the peaceful agitation, the pro-monarchy groups demanded monitoring of the agitation by the National Human Rights Commission and also other human rights bodies in the country.

Nawaraj Subedi, coordinator of the United People’s Movement Committee, submitted a petition to the commission on Thursday, demanding monitoring. Similarly, he has also expressed suspicion in the petition that nationalist leaders may be illegally arrested before the movement. The committee has said that the movement will be peaceful and based on the constitutional rights of the individuals.

The committee, which includes 44 political parties and activists including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, RPP Nepal, Nepali Congress (BP), Shiva Sena Nepal, has stated that the objectives of the movement are a constitutional monarchy, restoration of Hindu Rashtra, abolition of federalism, control of corruption, and ensuring good governance.

The petition expresses concern over the government’s “disproportionate use of force” and the deaths of civilians and journalists during the protest held in Tinkune on Chaitra 15 (March 28), and demanded the formation of a high-level judicial commission to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident. Additionally, it has been claimed that more than 60 protesters are currently being detained in a ‘prejudicial manner’.

Stating that the ‘threatening statements’ made by government ministers and leaders have strengthened suspicions of repression of the movement, the committee has demanded that the Human Rights Commission actively monitor and, if necessary, play an interventionist role.
