Stop the ‘blame game’

By L. D. Pulami
Everyone knows that the country is going through a very bad phase and the politicians are not doing much to improve the situation. The nation has become very weak, both politically and economically, and the people are facing constant pressure just to exist in this dire condition.
But the politicians seem to know how to wriggle out of even very difficult positions and also from accusations made by the media of their involvement in huge corruption cases. They pretend as if nothing has happened and walk away without making at least an effort to address such problems.
One of the most frequently used tactics by political leaders, top-level bureaucrats and powerful security officers to avoid the wrath of the people, has been to divert the attention of the masses from the immediate problems that actually need the government’s attention and also some logical clarification from their side.
But no, such things continue to happen and the people conveniently seem to forget many incidents for which political leaders, bureaucrats and the media too have to be blamed. The dubious activities they engage in just for their own interests and at the same time earn huge amounts of money for themselves, are all overlooked and with time also forgiven.
They do not seem to care at all about how much their nefarious activities have done to destroy the nation in different ways.
But before we discuss the tendency to blame others for corruption and such crimes these decision-makers themselves have committed, let us briefly take a look at the unstable political scenario in the country and the chaos that still exists here.
We had to witness a change of guards in the nation when the then government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal failed to get the required support from the parliamentarians to win the vote of confidence. Dahal had chosen to stick on in power and not give away his position as demanded by his opponents.
So another coalition led by the two biggest parties in the parliament, the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) was given the task of forming a new government. Now, a new government has already been formed, but nothing much has changed.
In this way, we have entered another phase of political instability, with the same old faces and those close to the main leaders, coming to power, there is no reason why the people have to expect much from these new ministers, apart from their new speeches and false promises which they make all the time.
With the alliance of the two big parties in parliament, there still is some hope that this alliance will at least be more stable than the previous one led by Dahal.
This may not be the time to make accusations and act like a ‘damp squid’ when the people are compelled to be confident of why these two parties, who were slinging accusations against one another till some weeks back, but now have joined hands to form a ‘national’ government are so sure that they will be able to bring justice to the masses.
So the doubts expressed by many about this new development in Nepali politics will really transform the country and its leaders as well surfaced and a lot will depend on how the so-called ‘new ministers’ do their jobs for really making the country more prosperous rather than working for their own interests and the narrow outlook of their ‘masters’ here in the country or outside.
Yet, the people are also fully knowledgeable that, while this was the fifth time that Dahal was seeking a vote of confidence in just over a short period of little over eighteen months of being in power, they, at the same time, are also sceptical at the entrance of KP Oli as prime minister and Sher Bahadur Deuba supporting him. The people know that his party, the Nepali Congress, is the largest in the present parliament and politically, these two are bitter rivals. There are all sorts of ‘conspiracy’ theories and also accusations about this sudden alliance formed by the two opposition sides and none less than outgoing prime minister Dahal, is in the forefront in speaking against this political charade.
Right now, this ‘blame game’ seems to be the favorite pastime of many political leaders, the media and also the so-called ‘intellectuals’, who want to thrust their ‘expert opinion’ into the minds of the common people, whether they like it or not.
Of course the people are also to blame for believing in these leaders, who have been misleading the people for many years now and at the same time also taking the nation to its present miserable state, is really surprising.
If these political leaders and the so-called front runners of civil society have come to attention through their sincere belief that they are doing such gimmicks for the welfare of the nation, it would be pardonable. But as they seem to be only working for one foreign power or the other, it leaves a sour taste in the mouths of the real patriots, who want to see an independent Nepal in all forms.
Now to go back to where we started, the easiest target for many leaders was to blame the former kings for all the problems the citizens and the country are facing now and in the past as well.
The leaders and their supporters also never forgot to mention their concern about the conspiracy being hatched against ‘loktantra’ while making huge promises to the common citizens.
Apart from not fulfilling the aspirations of the people, the political leaders have further angered the real citizens who care about the country, by sidelining the actual needs of the people and instead being engaged only in the struggle for power.
Such acts of the leaders do not make the people have more confidence in these self-appointed individuals who always say something which the people like to hear, but which does not happen in real life.
This may sound as harsh, but still let all come to know that the persons who claim to be the real ‘nationalist’ are actually working only for some foreign powers, but at the same time misleading others who are the ‘real’ patriots, by accusing them of being ‘regressive forces’ who are against democracy while though they are selling the nation, are completely clean.
