The govt spending billions of rupees to purchase fertilisers without trying to set up one plant in home

The Ministry of Finance has ensured an additional source of Rs. 7.50 billion to purchase the chemical fertilisers required for the current financial year.

The Ministry of Finance has agreed to manage the additional budget to import fertilisers as per a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Of the guaranteed resources, Rs. 2.40 billion will be arranged from the budget allocated for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development while Rs. 2.50 billion will be included in the budget ceiling of the next fiscal, said the Ministry of Finance.

Similarly, around Rs. 2.60 billion will be disbursed after the liability is created. The government has allocated Rs. 15 billion to purchase chemical fertilisers for the current fiscal year.

The Ministry of Finance had ensured an additional source of Rs. 16 billion for the purchase of chemical fertilisers. According to the demand of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, additional resources of budget have been arranged, said the Finance Ministry.

When the government has managed an extra Rs 23 billion to import fertilisers for this year, it has done nothing to set up a plant to produce fertilisers within the country. Rs. 23 billion is a big amount enough to set up a plant to produce compost. But as the government authorities tend to enjoy commission while importing fertilisers, they hardly make effort to set up a fertiliser factory at home.

Shortage of chemical fertilisers during the plantation season is a recurrent problem. It has been decades since the farmers started facing a shortage of fertilisers during plantation season, but the governments have not taken any concrete steps to permanently solve the problems by setting up plants to produce fertilisers within the country.
