Repeating the same game

By P.R. Pradhan

The result of the 20 November elections is not enthusiastic as the same ugly and notorious people are going to be repeated in the government. None of the political parties was able to bag a majority, again, there will be a hung parliament and more likely, the ruling five-party alliance will continue.

The syndicate of the five parties was successful to some extent but it didn’t work to strengthen Maoist Center, Unified Socialist Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party and Samyukta Janamorcha, except the Nepali Congress. In the strength of the five-party syndicate, NC has been able to emerge as the largest party but a large number of the NC voters chose the election symbol “bell” giving birth to a new political party dominated by youths.

Vote counting of the proportional election is on, yet, the Unified Socialist Party has not been able to secure its position as a national party, however, the party is hopeful that it will cross the 3 per cent threshold. Except for the NC, other parties have lost around 50 per cent of the seats allotted for them. Meanwhile, Rastriya Swatantra Party has emerged with 7 seats through the FPTP election and is likely to add 15 more seats through the proportional election.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party, a party which is against the 2015 constitution and demanding a Hindu kingdom and removal of federalism, end of corruption and introduction of rule of law has been able to show its presence with around a dozen MPs.

Odd to note, despite the development of a syndicate to finish the UML, it has emerged as the second largest party after the NC.

India comfortable government:

The Indian ambassador has become active along with the result of the 20 November elections. He is making efforts for an India comfortable government. One cannot deny other foreign forces will remain silent in the formation of the new government, however, viewing the present trend, there will be Indian influence in the formation of the new government.

Bargaining:

There will be a bargain among the alliance partners for the post of President, Vice President, speaker, deputy speaker and other positions. Baburam Bhattarai and Agni Sapokata are the possible candidates for the post of President and VP from the Maoist Center. However, Sher Bahadur Deuba is under pressure for managing Mahantha Thakur in elsewhere’s interests, according to the Sanghu vernacular weekly. Deuba is under pressure for rewarding Thakur for the post of President.

No majority government in provinces:

According to the present result, none of the political parties will have the sole majority to form a single-party government in all seven provinces. There will be a coalition government in all the provinces.
