Electricity Authority buys electricity from India at Rs 38 per unit

Kathmandu, 24 March: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has decided to purchase electricity from India at Rs 38 per unit from Friday. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) spokesperson Suresh Bhattarai told at a press conference on Thursday that they have negotiated with India to buy electricity at the highest price ever.
There was a shortage of electricity in some industrial areas of Nepal when NEA did not buy it saying that electricity was expensive in India. But on Wednesday, Nepal agreed to buy electricity from the Indian market, even if it is expensive. Spokesperson Bhattarai says that the amount that Nepal has to pay when buying electricity at Rs 20 will be up to Rs 38 per unit.
“From today, under the direction of the executive director, we will pay Rs 20 per unit, that is, Rs 38 per unit in Nepal. When all our systems are normalized at 12:15 pm, we will buy 7,000 MW of electricity from India”, he said.
Until a few days ago, Nepal had bought electricity at Rs 8 per unit. However, Bhattarai said that there was a shortage of electricity in India for a few days due to the sudden rise in energy prices there and the lack of electricity offered at cheaper rates.
