Govt. decision challenged on pesticide residue test

Kathmandu, 10 July: The Supreme Court has registered three writ petitions filed against the government’s decision to allow the entry of vegetables and fruits without conducting pesticide residue test.

Separate petitions were filed by advocate Jyoti Baniya on behalf of Consumers’ Rights Protection Forum, and advocates Swagat Nepal and Narayan Prasad Duwadi, and Kanchan Krishna Neupane. They demanded the Supreme Court to issue an interim order asking government to stop the import of the pesticide-laced fruits and vegetables, according to the apex court.

The Council of Ministers, on July 4, had withdrawn its earlier decision to conduct pesticide residue test on the fruits and vegetables imported from India.

The advocates in the writ have argued that the consumption of such fruits and vegetables badly affect the pregnant women resulting serious health hazards to the fetus. The decision to withdraw earlier decision is against public health and against the constitutional provision on citizen’s right to food security.
