The one day conference on “Role of Women for Inclusive Development of Nepal” was successfully organized by Nepal Muslim Women Welfare Society (NMWWS) with support from the World Muslim Communities Council (WMCC) on 17 December 2018 in Kathmandu. The international conference was inaugurated by Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun amidst a special ceremony.
In his inaugural speech, Pun said that Nepal’s constitution is one of the best in the world in relation to women’s rights. He appreciated WMCC for its support in organizing the conference and helping to strengthen relations between Nepal and UAE. He assured that the government would always give special consideration to guarantee the rights specially the marginalized communities including Muslim. He further added that only inclusive development with women empowerment can lead to socio-economic prosperity of our nation.
In her welcome speech, Ms. Seema Khan, chairperson of NMMWS and executive member of WMMC, expressed that this conference would add extra step in struggle of Nepali women for their empowerment. She added that women empowerment would be possible through their proper participation, education and equal distribution of resources.
Special guest president of WMCC, Dr. Ali Al-Nuaimi appreciated the constitution of Nepal. However, the society has to change itself from the patriarchal mindset towards women to bring about the true change while the government should give special priority to bring forward those women who are socially and economically marginalized. Dr. Nuaimi shared the UAE achievements of engaging and empowering women by citing UAE’s recent declaration of 2019 as the “Year of Tolerance”.
General secretary of WMCC, Dr. Mohammed Bechari highlighted the activities of WMCC and assured its continuation of support in the coming days.
A total of 150 participants attended the conference representing various ministries of the Nepal government, national planning commission, human rights commission, election commission, representatives of CSO, women activists, diplomats, religious leaders, media, members of local bodies from the various districts of Nepal and international delegates from WMCC, UAE.
Twelve papers were presented under the 4 thematic sessions as follows: 1) Role of Women in Consolidating Role of women in consolidating community security in Nepal 2) Nepal’s 2015 constitution and the protection of cultural and religious pluralism 3) UAE’s success in empowering women, and 4) Future of Nepali Women: Expectations and hopes.
On the second day, a training on “Sustainable Development Goal” was organized to the elected members of the local bodies (mayor, deputy mayors, ward chairperson, ward members, etc) and the young women activists from different districts of the country.
