FM Khanal pushes for stronger Nepal-India partnership

KATHMANDU, June 7: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to deepening relations with India, describing the neighbouring country as Nepal’s most important partner and stressing the need for a modern, development-focused partnership.

Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his delegation in New Delhi on Saturday, Khanal said the new government is ready to engage with India at the highest level to advance shared interests and strengthen cooperation.

He said Nepal and India are connected by more than historical and cultural ties, adding that the government has received a strong public mandate to pursue economic growth and practical, results-driven diplomacy.

“Nepal places the highest priority on its relationship with India. We are prepared to engage with clear goals and a strong commitment to delivering meaningful outcomes,” Khanal said.

He noted that his party is not constrained by past political baggage and is determined to build a forward-looking relationship with India based on mutual trust and shared development goals.

Referring to an article published in Hindustan Times during Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane’s recent visit to India, Khanal said the government remains committed to advancing the vision outlined in the piece.

He emphasized that Nepal wants to reshape its ties with India into a modern partnership centred on development, economic cooperation, and long-term progress.

Khanal opened his remarks by conveying greetings from Prime Minister Balen Shah to the government and people of India. He also thanked India for its support during natural disasters and the recent crisis in West Asia.

Highlighting India’s role in Nepal’s economy, Khanal expressed appreciation for India’s continued assistance in ensuring supplies of essential goods, including fuel and fertilizers.

“India has consistently supported Nepal in meeting key economic needs. On behalf of the government and people of Nepal, I extend our sincere gratitude for that support,” he said.
