34 Years Ago: Reconciliation Amidst Polarization

Kathmandu — After the massacre during the Nepal Banda, the Congress has dug in its heels and clung to office without any remorse. The UML leadership has reconciled itself to the upcoming local polls and has reached an uneasy rapprochement with the Nepali Congress on the one hand, while preparing various programs aimed at appealing to the masses.

The Machiavellian man, Mohan Adhikari, has also met the King, assuring His Majesty that the UML, as a loyal opposition, will be conciliatory towards both the Congress and other leftist groups.

On the other hand, CPN (Masal) has come out with its own program, presenting a 14-point demand, the most prominent of which is the resignation of the government and that the criminals responsible for the massacre be brought to book promptly. It has also launched another joint program with the Nepal Communist League, Nepal Peasants and Workers Party, and the Marxist-Leninist–Maoists. While the demands are similar, the programs have been structured in such a way as not to hamper each other’s agendas.
