UML to stage nationwide protests over Oli’s arrest

Kathmandu, March 28: The secretariat meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) has announced a series of protest programs, demanding the immediate release of former Prime Minister and party chair KP Sharma Oli.

The meeting held today decided to strongly counter Oli’s arrest through both legal and political means. It also made public a plan to intensify protests nationwide through party structures.

According to the decision, protest demonstrations will be held today at 3 pm at district headquarters across the country under the leadership of party-affiliated mass organisations. Likewise, on March 28, protest rallies will be organized in all districts by district party committees, followed by the submission of memorandums to the offices of the Chief District Officer (CDO).

The UML also said it will engage in dialogue and cooperation with all political parties, civil society, and the general public who support democracy and the rule of law. The party expressed serious concern over recent developments and signalled that the protests will be escalated in phases.

Decisions of the UML Secretariat Meeting:

  1. To strongly oppose the arrest through legal and political means, with the support of the general public and civil society.
  2. To organise protest demonstrations today at 3 pm in all district headquarters under the leadership of mass organisations.
  3. To hold widespread protests on March 28 at 12 pm in all districts, organised by district party committees, and submit memorandums to the CDO offices.
  4. To initiate dialogue and cooperation with all pro-democracy and rule-of-law political parties, civil society, and the general public.
