Basnet: Arrests over Karki report could push nation into conflict

Kathmandu, March 26: Mahesh Basnet, Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), has warned that if the government begins making arrests under the pretext of implementing the Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission report, the country could slide toward conflict.

The first Cabinet meeting formed today under the leadership of Balen Shah, who also leads the parliamentary party of Rastriya Swatantra Party, decided to move ahead with implementing the Karki Commission report.

The meeting decided that before taking action against the security apparatus recommended by the commission, a study committee would be formed, and further steps would follow based on its recommendations.

However, in cases not involving the security agencies, the Cabinet decided to immediately implement the commission’s recommendations.

A few hours after the decision was made public, Basnet reacted through social media, warning of serious consequences. He wrote that the Balen-led government had taken a decision on the Karki Commission report in its very first Cabinet meeting regarding the Gen-Z incident investigation. He claimed the decision was “deceptive and conspiratorial,” alleging that while a study committee would be formed for security personnel, the recommendations concerning the then Prime Minister, Home Minister, and other individuals would be directly enforced.

Basnet warned that if the government uses the report as a tool for arrests or political retaliation, it would not only face immediate backlash but also risk pushing the country back toward conflict.

He further labeled the decision as biased and unacceptable under any circumstances, adding that it would be met with strong resistance.
