Trump says China won’t attack Taiwan as long as he is President

Kathmandu, Aug 17: U.S. President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured him that China will not attack Taiwan.

On Friday (local time), speaking to Fox News about the assurance Xi gave him, Trump said Xi promised not to attack Taiwan.

According to Reuters, Xi told Trump, “As long as you are president, I will not attack Taiwan.”

In the interview, Trump said, “The situation between China and Taiwan could have become serious. But I don’t think such an attack will happen while I am president. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

During Trump’s second term, Xi had called him in April, though the exact date of the call was not disclosed.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has expressed a desire to unify it by force if necessary. Taiwan, however, strongly opposes this claim and operates independently.

The United States is a major arms supplier and international supporter of Taiwan, though the two countries do not have formal diplomatic relations.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington on Friday said the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive matter in China–U.S. relations.

“The U.S. government must adhere to the ‘One-China Policy’ and the three joint communiqués between China and the U.S.,” embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said. “Matters related to Taiwan should be handled wisely, and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait must be sincerely safeguarded alongside China–U.S. relations.”
