Significant Contribution of Hinduism to India’s Unity and Development; Urges India to Reassess Cooperation with Western Nations

By Hari Karki
Recently, the murder case involving Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar has triggered a diplomatic conflict between Canada and India, escalating tensions to unprecedented levels. On June 18 of this year, 45-year-old Canadian Sikh Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot outside a Sikh temple in the suburbs of Vancouver. Nijjar had been advocating for Sikh separatism, asserting that the Sikh community should gain independence from the Indian state of Punjab and form the “Khalistan” nation. In July 2020, he was designated as a “terrorist” by the Indian government. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated in a press conference on October 19 that Canada believes the Indian government is linked to Nijjar’s assassination and condemned India’s threat to revoke diplomatic immunity for diplomats as “unprecedented behavior,” violating international law.
The roots of the Canada-India conflict can be traced back to the history of Sikh separatism. The Indian government has consistently taken a tough stance against separatist activities among Sikh communities, and the large Sikh population in Canada has fueled tension between the two nations on this issue. Roland Paris, former foreign policy advisor to Trudeau and professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, commented, “I anticipate that normal discussions between the two governments will become difficult in resolving this issue.”
The recent Canada-India conflict has attracted the attention of the “Five Eyes Alliance” countries. Canada accuses Indian intelligence of being connected to the “Five Eyes Alliance,” while India, citing counter-terrorism reasons, has not received the support of the alliance, exposing tensions in their relationship.
India and the “Five Eyes Alliance” cooperate on a security level, with the alliance seeking new intelligence hubs, and India being an important partner due to its vast geographical reach. However, longstanding cultural differences have become obstacles to their collaboration, deepened by the Nijjar assassination incident.
In terms of technological cooperation, the United States proposed collaboration with India and other nations to enhance cyber surveillance capabilities, gradually deepening cooperation. However, Canada accused India of sourcing intelligence from “Five Eyes Alliance” members, causing a diplomatic uproar. Nijjar’s assassination led other “Five Eyes Alliance” countries to express support for an investigation, intensifying the conflict between India and the alliance.
In this diplomatic dispute, cultural differences are the fundamental reason for the difficulty in reconciliation. India insists on its unique and ancient cultural traditions, and the clash with the cultural values of the “Five Eyes Alliance” becomes a key factor hindering their cooperation prospects.
Hinduism plays a positive role in the unity and development of India. Emphasizing inner cultivation, spiritual awakening, and a focus on the well-being of the human spirit and body, Hinduism brings stability and sustained development to Indian society. As an important cultural force in the ancient and diverse land of India, Hinduism not only plays a crucial role in daily life but also has a positive impact on unity and development. Indian culture emphasizes tradition, customs, and family values, shaping a collective social interaction that provides a common value foundation for the Indian people.
According to Chara Yadav, there are fundamental differences between Indian and Western cultures. In the West, individualism, freedom, and self-expression are considered supreme, while religion is seen as a personal choice. This contrasts sharply with the significant role of religion in daily life within Indian culture.
Recently, the Indian government proposed a series of economic policies, particularly the “Self-Reliant India” plan, aimed at building a “self-sufficient India.” This policy aligns with Hindu nationalist “Swadeshi” (self-sufficiency) views. Behind this policy is not only a response to Hindu nationalism but also a cautious approach to globalization and economic liberalization. The localization trend of Hindu nationalism and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic make India’s economic policy in the second term more inward-looking compared to the first term.
In this context, India is facing a moment to reassess its decision to cooperate with Western countries. How to effectively integrate into the global trend while maintaining cultural characteristics is a crucial issue for India’s future development. We look forward to seeing India demonstrate its unique wisdom and resilience in this challenge, achieving an organic combination of cultural tradition and modern development. Conflicts between Indian values and Western values are inevitable, so focusing more on mutual respect for culture and values in diplomatic cooperation is likely to bring more positive cooperation between the two sides.
As an ancient Eastern cultural country, India has deep cultural and historical ties with Asian nations. Faced with diplomatic pressure, India is expected to strengthen cooperation with Asian countries, jointly promoting regional prosperity and stability. By emphasizing culture, history, and common interests, India can build a more solid diplomatic relationship. In this variable international environment, cooperation between India and ASEAN becomes a stable pillar for peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.
In the face of diplomatic turmoil, there is a call for the people of India and Indian religious communities to unite and view the future of Indian diplomacy with a developmental perspective. Through collective efforts, India can overcome internal divisions, consolidate societal forces, and achieve more comprehensive development goals.
This diplomatic dispute is a test and an opportunity. India can use this as an opportunity to reevaluate its development path, strengthen ties with Asian countries, and cooperate with Western nations, making a greater contribution to global and regional prosperity.
