Sunakothi Greenhouse Project supported by South Korea inaugurated

Kathmandu, March 28: The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Nepal has actively participated in various initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties, promoting cultural exchange, economic cooperation, agricultural cooperation, and development cooperation in Nepal. On Thursday, March 26, South Korean Ambassador Park Taeyoung attended the inauguration ceremony of the Sunakothi Greenhouse Project, supported by Cheorwon-Gun City of the Republic of Korea, a sister city of Lalitpur Metropolitan City. 

Lee Hyunjong, the Mayor of Cheorwon-Gun City, Republic of Korea, emphasized the importance of a sister city relationship and expressed interest in expanding cooperation in various sectors to adopt best practices from each other during the opening ceremony. Mayor Lee intends to exchange cooperation in areas such as modern agriculture, waste management, urban beautification, and sports development with Nepal.

The Mayor of the Cheorwon–Gun City expressed support and collaboration with Lalitpur Metropolitan City in the agricultural sector, and a group of local women farmers has been collectively engaged in traditional farming activities at the Chhahari Krishi Ekal Mahila Samuha (Single Women Farmers Firm). To modernize this farming practice, a proposal has been made to construct a greenhouse tunnel using modern agricultural technology to produce off-season vegetables, along with providing related training. Korea is considered one of the most advanced countries in this type of agricultural practice.

In the opening remarks, Ambassador Park Taeyoung also highlighted that this Greenhouse project stands as a remarkable example of the deepening friendship between Nepal and the Republic of Korea. Korea believes in the power of modern agricultural technology to transform people’s livelihoods. The Korean government will introduce advanced greenhouse systems that will enable farmers in Korea to overcome seasonal limitations, increase productivity, and improve the incomes of the farmers.

Chiribabu Maharjan, Mayor of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City, shared that this project will introduce advanced greenhouse technology to Nepal, bringing long-term benefits to the agricultural sector. At the same time, it will provide local farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge, empowering them and strengthening their livelihoods.

The event was attended by more than 50 participants including nine officials from Cheorowon-Gun City Republic of Korea, officials from Lalitpur Metropolitan City, women farmers from Chhahari Agriculture single women’s house Sunakothi, officials from South Korean Embassy.
