
Kathmandu, March 23: In the current fiscal year, 17 rhinos have died in Chitwan. Among them, one died due to electrocution, while the others died of natural causes. In total, 57 wild animals, including rhinos, have died in this fiscal year. These animals died in the park and surrounding areas since the month of July, 2025.
According to Avinash Thapa Magar, Information Officer of Chitwan National Park, four tigers, three elephants, and 18 spotted deer have died in this fiscal year. Similarly, two each of leopards, swamp deer, mugger crocodiles, and gharial crocodiles have died. One python and one monitor lizard have also died, along with four other wild animals. These animals died due to reasons such as getting trapped in marshes, fighting among themselves, accidents, and tiger attacks.
He stated that increased awareness and growing social responsibility have helped protect wildlife from poaching this fiscal year. With rising conservation awareness at the community level, poaching of wildlife has decreased. In the previous fiscal year, 81 wild animals had died.
