Kathmandu, March 17: Six Nepali nationals have been arrested for filming and posting sensitive photos and videos related to the ongoing conflict in West Asia on social media.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong warning to Nepalis living and working in the region not to upload such content on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, saying it violates the laws and security rules of the host countries.
According to the ministry, several governments in the region have strictly banned taking photos or videos related to war and security situations and sharing them online.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri said that creating, filming, or sharing such materials on social media is considered illegal in those countries. Even reposting or sharing content produced by others can lead to legal action.
The arrested Nepalis may face serious penalties under the laws of those countries, including heavy fines and long prison terms. After serving their sentence, they could also be deported.
“Governments and security agencies there are working day and night to ensure the safety of both their citizens and foreign nationals,” Paudel said. “They have already issued advisories asking people not to create or share content that could spread fear. Despite this, six Nepalis were arrested for producing and sharing such materials.”
The ministry said it is unfortunate that such incidents continue to happen despite repeated warnings through Nepali embassies and the media.
It has urged all Nepali migrant workers in the region to strictly follow local laws and avoid any activities that host governments consider illegal.
