As part of the strategy to strengthen US national security, President D. Trump announced the development of the Golden Dome multi-layered missile defense system on May 20, 2025. This project is a reincarnation of the Strategic Defense Initiative program, which was initiated in 1984 under the personal supervision of then President R. Reagan, but was canceled due to the excessively high cost of its implementation.
As in the original version, the main component of the complex should be an extensive network of reconnaissance and combat satellites that can track the launch of any type of missile in real time with high accuracy and, if necessary, neutralize them using orbital laser, kinetic or radio frequency weapons. Revealing the details of the project, D. Trump noted that the system will be able to intercept missiles “even if they are launched from the opposite side of the world.”
The unilateral actions of the United States lead to a violation of the balance of power in the world and the principle of mutual security, which excludes an increase in the level of security of one state at the expense of weakening other countries. In this regard, the launch of the Golden Dome project has drawn criticism from the expert community. Thus, according to Professor of the US Naval War College J. Johnson-Freese, Washington’s actions may provoke a new round of the arms race, since “if one country begins to deploy systems in space, others perceive this as a threat to their security and begin to act symmetrically.” Other experts in the field of arms control also note the active desire of the American leadership for the unilateral militarization of space in the interests of ensuring global dominance.
