We saw a huge crowd of youths applying for jobs in South Korea. The number is many times greater than the required vacancies. When a large group of youths were denied the opportunity to attend the examination for employment, irritated youths organized a demonstration in the street at Balkumari in Lalitpur on 29 December 2023. The police, to control the situation, launched a lathi charge and also opened fire on the agitators, killing two youths.
Security officials and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha have confirmed that Minister Prakash Jwala was responsible for irritating the protesters. Despite Minister Jwala’s PSOs’ request to take another route, the minister gave a strict order to go through the disturbed route. When the minister’s vehicle was halted by angry protesters, the minister came down from the vehicle and started an argument with them. Some protesters even pushed the minister aside, from which the police were compelled to open fire. After the firing only, the minister’s vehicle was burned. The Minister could change the route when it was disturbed. When the vehicle started burning, the chief district administration officer gave the order to the police to open fire to save the minister. As a result, two youths lost their lives. The government recalled the chief district officer and also the district police chief and decided to provide one million rupees each to the two deceased youths seeking jobs in South Korea.
The police could use other means of controlling demonstration, including the use of water fountains, teargas and blank fires to avoid human casualties. Meanwhile, the government has set the price of a life equivalent to one million rupees, which is a pathetic story.
Youths are going abroad for jobs. Every day, around six thousand youths are going abroad for jobs. The government is encouraging them to go abroad instead of stopping them in the country by providing job opportunities. The nation’s major source for receiving foreign currency has become the remittance revenue. There is a scarcity of youths in villages. There is an acute shortage of manpower within the country and we are inviting the Indian labour forces to work in our farmlands. These are not positive characteristics of the economy. Furthermore, students are going abroad for further study and jobs; medical doctors, nurses, and engineers are also rushing for foreign jobs. They all are losing hope and a prosperous future in the country due to the bad leadership, nevertheless, the political leadership are less bothered about such a pathetic situation. When the leadership fail to ensure citizens’ future within the country, this is a failed nation syndrome.
