Urmila Aryal, a leader of the CPN-Maoist Centre, was elected as the vice-chairperson of the National Assembly unopposed on Monday. She was the only candidate for the post from the ruling alliance as the opposition parties did not file their candidacy for the post in the Upper House.
National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina announced that Aryal was elected unopposed in the Assembly. The post had remained vacant since last year after Sashikala Dahal’s four-year tenure came to an end.
Aryal, 66, took the oath of her office and secrecy on Tuesday morning at the Office of the President.
NA Chairperson Timalsina administered the oath to the deputy chair in the presence of the President.
Former leader of the CPN-UML, Aryal joined the Maoist Centre in 2012. Aryal also served as the Minister for Local Development when she was a UML leader.
