Citizenship Bill: President remains adamant about her stand

Kathmandu, 20 September: With only six hours left for Tuesday, President  Bidya Devi Bhandari has not authenticated the Citizenship Bill, which is at the center of Nepali politics. There is increasing interest throughout the country whether the bill will be authenticated or not.

The bill to amend the Citizenship Act, approved by Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota on September 5 and submitted to the President, should be authenticated by Tuesday, as per the in the constitutional provision. If she does not authenticate it by today, it will be automatically null and void.

According to the President’s Office sources, she has said that she has maintained her stance on the bill indicating that she will not authenticate it although she does not have any constitutional right to deny it. President Bhandari sent the bill back to the House of Representatives on August 14 with 15 points of suggestions in the bill that was first submitted for authentication. She is displeased after both Houses re-passed and sent the bill without addressing  her suggestion and concerns, as per the ruling coalition’s decision.
