The standing committee meeting of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has endorsed a political document jointly presented by party chairman duo KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
After deliberations and disputes lasting for days, the standing committee meeting held at the Dhumbarahi-based party headquarters on Friday endorsed the report incorporating suggestions made by the party leaders on Friday.
The standing committee meeting became a platform for the communist leaders to express their ire towards the party leadership, mostly Prime Minister and party chair K P Oli and the activities of the government
.Leaders like Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal and Narayankaji Shrestha heavily criticized the government for its participation in the controversial Asia Pacific Summit held in Kathmandu. But the same summit brought Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal together, as the latter did not criticise the government as expected.
However, the standing committee turned Bam Dev Gautam into a pawn in the CPN as most of the leaders previously loyal to him shifted to Oli camp. Gautam had presented a separate document in the meeting but failed to garner support for it.
With the conclusion of the standing committee meeting Dahal has become more powerful as no leader criticised him when Oli was charged for the mess in the party and the poor performance of the government.
Earlier, on Thursday, the meeting had failed to endorse the joint political report prepared by the chairman duo after the dissident leaders of the party opposed it saying the document had failed to accommodate their concerns.
Responding to the concerns raised by the dissident leaders in the party’s ongoing Standing Committee (SC) meeting on Thursday, Oli asked the leaders to endorse the political dossier, promising to incorporate the “genuine” suggestions in the report later.
Chairman Oli had to clarify his position on crucial issues — proposal to enforce ‘one person, one position’, the controversy over the government hosting the Asia Pacific Summit and the government’s poor performance.
Rawal and Bhusal demanded that the party’s statute be revised so that the Standing Committee could be empowered as the supreme body instead of the secretariat. The existing party statute mandates the secretariat to decide the crucial issues.
Following protests by the dissident leaders, Dahal had even deferred the party’s meeting by a day.
The standing committee also formed an eight-member taskforce to finalise the party’s long-stalled unification process in district level and various sister organisations by mid-January.
General Secretary Bishnu Poudel and standing committee members Ram Bahadur Thapa, Shanker Pokharel, Barshaman Pun, Yogesh Bhattarai, Lekhraj Bhatta, Surendra Pandey and Beduram Bhusal are the members of the taskforce.
