Kathmandu, Sept 15: Nepal Police has stepped up rescue, sanitation, relief management and rehabilitation efforts to help residents affected by the Bhotekoshi floods return to normal daily life.
The floods caused extensive damage to settlements, roads and bridges along the river corridor. Despite limited resources, police personnel have been working continuously to clear stones, mud, sand and building debris from homes and public areas.
Police have prioritised clearing debris from affected areas, cleaning damaged homes and restoring schools, health facilities and other public buildings so they can resume operations. The work is being carried out in coordination with local governments, residents and other security agencies.
Central Police Spokesperson Avinarayan Kafle said the police had intensified their efforts to ease the daily lives of flood victims.
“Police personnel are working round the clock to clean victims’ homes, return valuables recovered from debris to their owners, and remove stones and mud from schools and health facilities,” he said.
Kafle said police were also working to help residents overcome the psychological trauma caused by the disaster. The Bhotekoshi floods caused not only physical and human losses but also widespread psychological distress among affected communities. Police are providing counselling services, with particular attention to the impact on senior citizens, women and children.
Police have also prioritised helping people who lost family members and property cope with the stress and difficulties of daily life.
In holding centres and other locations across the affected districts, police have increased vigilance against possible abuse and violence targeting women, children and senior citizens. Relief distribution to rescued people is being carried out in coordination with local governments and other concerned agencies to ensure an organised process.
According to Nepal Police, 196 programmes have so far been conducted in flood affected districts under its community police partnership initiative, benefiting 47,774 people.
The police have also launched the ‘Timure to Triveni’ operation to strengthen post disaster management and rehabilitation efforts across the Bhotekoshi flood affected areas.
