Kathmandu, Oct 31: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said the government has begun reviewing policies and preparing reforms to develop Nepal’s gaming and IT sectors as industries and make it easier for businesses to operate.
In a Facebook post, Shah said games developed in Nepal had gained popularity worldwide and that the government was taking steps to address industry challenges and support its growth.
He noted that two popular games, Ludo, which has recorded around 200 million downloads, and Callbreak, with more than 150 million downloads, were developed by Nepalis. Hundreds of young people are also actively involved in game development, he said.
Shah added that he had held discussions with game developers to understand the problems and challenges they face.
The government aims to create an environment in which globally successful billion-dollar companies, known as unicorns, can emerge from Nepal, he said.
Given the potential for IT product development and exports, the government plans to simplify the tax system and introduce policy reforms to help companies earn revenue more easily and reinvest their profits. It will also ease strict and outdated regulations governing international earnings, he said.
The government will invest in programmes such as Game Jams, startup events and hackathons to promote gaming and the wider IT sector. Shah also said regular discussions would be facilitated among the IT industry, Nepal Rastra Bank and the Ministry of Finance.
Nepal’s IT and gaming sectors have promising prospects, Shah said, adding that the government would provide full support to help Nepali talent establish a presence in the global market.
