Four houses, steel bridge swept away in Gorkha flood

Gorkha, Sept 6: Four houses and a steel bridge were swept away by a flood in Chumnubri Rural Municipality 4 of Gorkha early Sunday morning.

According to DSP Rajkumar Shrestha, a flood in the Namrung Khola around 3 am swept away the houses of Nurbu Ongyal, Urgen Chhyoden, Lhakpa Bhuti and Dorje Gyalzen in Namrung.

No human casualties were reported. Residents fled after learning that the flood was rising, saving their lives, Shrestha said.

Assistant Chief District Officer Netraprasad Sharma said the river may have been temporarily blocked upstream before bursting into a debris laden flood.

The flood also swept away a steel bridge connecting wards 4 and 2 of the rural municipality.

The flow had weakened by 4:40am Sunday and the river has since returned to its normal level, Sharma said.

As the Namrung Khola flows into the Budhigandaki River, authorities have urged residents living along the Budhigandaki riverbank to remain alert.
