KATHMANDU, Sept. 6: Authorities have recovered 1,331 bodies following the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood in Rasuwa on August 10, while around 5,000 people remain unaccounted for.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said the recovered bodies include 360 in Chitwan, 222 in East Nawalparasi, 219 in West Nawalparasi, 195 in Nuwakot, 156 in Rasuwa, 74 in Gorkha, 67 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun.
NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat said the latest records show about 1,967 people missing in Rasuwa and 2,340 in Nuwakot. The list also includes 589 foreign nationals and 100 security personnel and government employees. With thousands still missing, authorities have intensified search and rescue operations across affected areas.
Rescue teams have so far evacuated 13,101 people. The Nepali Army rescued 4,162, Nepal Police 4,068 and the Armed Police Force 4,871. Authorities have identified 98 recovered bodies and handed them over to relatives.
The disaster has also left thousands requiring medical attention. According to Mahat, 5,929 injured and affected people have received treatment, including 316 at hospitals, 3,297 through the Nepali Army and 2,316 through the Armed Police Force.
Meanwhile, 3,982 displaced people are sheltering at 41 holding centers in Kathmandu, Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Government agencies are providing relief and essential services while working to move affected residents to safer locations.
Security agencies, local governments and government and non-government organizations continue to coordinate search, rescue, treatment and relief efforts. NDRRMA said operations to locate those still missing have been further intensified as authorities seek to account for the thousands affected by the disaster.
