Kathmandu, Aug 30: The United States has announced more than $3.6 million in additional humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.
The US Department of State said in a statement issued Saturday that the new assistance would provide life-saving support to people facing severe hardship following the disaster.
The funding will support food assistance for 10,000 flood-affected people for three months, according to the statement. The assistance comes as rescue and relief operations continue in areas hit hardest by the floods, particularly along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors.
The United States has also been closely monitoring the situation involving its citizens who were in Nepal when the disaster struck. American tourists and other US nationals were among foreign visitors reported missing after the flood swept through areas used by people travelling toward destinations including Gosainkunda and the Nepal-China border.
Nepal’s authorities have been conducting search and rescue operations for missing foreign nationals alongside the wider disaster response. The Nepal Tourism Board has reported that hundreds of foreign tourists who lost contact after the flooding have been rescued, while many others remain unaccounted for.
The disaster has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of deaths reported and thousands of people still missing in Nepal and across the border in Tibet. Hydropower workers, residents and foreign visitors are among those who remain unaccounted for.
The US government had earlier provided emergency support following the floods and has now expanded its assistance as the scale of the humanitarian needs becomes clearer.
The additional funding will be channelled toward immediate food needs as relief agencies and Nepali authorities continue reaching communities cut off by damaged roads, bridges and communication networks.
The latest US assistance comes as Nepal continues its search for survivors and missing people while simultaneously working to deliver relief supplies and restore damaged infrastructure in the affected districts.
