Kathmandu, Aug 18: The Nepali Congress has concluded its nine-day Central Working Committee meeting at the party headquarters in Sanepa, deciding to hold its 15th General Convention as scheduled from October 2 to 5.
Addressing the meeting, party president Gagan Thapa said the general convention would take place on the previously announced dates. However, the schedules for conventions at the ward and other lower levels will be adjusted.
Thapa said the convention process would begin Tuesday.
The Central Election Committee, coordinated by Prem Bahadur Khadka, will train election officers at the party headquarters in Sanepa at 2 pm Tuesday in the presence of Thapa. The officers have been appointed to conduct elections in various districts under the 15th General Convention. The party has selected individuals with legal backgrounds as election officers.
Thapa said he was still trying to bring all factions and ideological groups within the party into the general convention.
“I will continue talks with the leaders for a few more days,” he said on Monday. “The general convention will be held on the scheduled dates. We will invite outgoing party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to the opening session on October 2.”
Thapa pledged to conduct the convention fairly and transparently. He also said committees handling active membership verification and other convention related tasks could include leaders who did not participate in the special general convention.
The Nepali Congress has around 800,000 active members.
Thapa said eight district presidents and several constituency presidents had attended a gathering organised by the dissident faction from August 14 to 16. He said such gatherings were part of the party’s established practice and that he had also organised similar meetings in the past.
However, he warned that leaders refusing to conduct district or constituency conventions according to the approved schedule could lose their responsibilities, with others appointed in their place.
Thapa said he was continuing efforts to unite the party and had held repeated discussions with outgoing president Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Shekhar Koirala, who he said had also been working toward party unity.
