Kathmandu, Aug. 18: The government has moved to open formal negotiations with the protest movement led by medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, forming a four-member team to engage with representatives of the Rashtra, Rashtriyata, Dharma, Sanskriti and Nagarik Bachau Maha Abhiyan.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has assigned Joint Secretary Liladhar Subedi to coordinate the talks. The team includes Joint Secretary Anand Kafle from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Joint Secretary Mahesh Acharya from the Ministry of Finance, and Joint Secretary Dilaram Panthi from the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration.
The decision followed hours of discussions between government officials and representatives of the Maha Abhiyan on Monday at the office of Lalitpur Chief District Officer Narahari Ghimire.
During the meeting, the two sides agreed that the government would formally constitute a negotiation team and invite the protest leaders for talks, responding to a key demand of the movement.
The Maha Abhiyan representatives accepted the government’s invitation and received the formal letter calling them to negotiations.
The protest movement was represented by Bishnu Bohora Chhetri, Raju Acharya, Sakuni Singh, Hardeo Mahato, Tara Bajgain and Vijay Thapa.
The government’s move marks a shift toward dialogue as the Prasai led campaign continues to press its demands.
