CIAA Chief Rai to PM Karki: ‘I will investigate all corruption cases’

Kathmandu, Sept 22: Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Prem Rai, has told Prime Minister Sushila Karki that he is ready to investigate all forms of corruption.

At a time when there are growing calls to remove Rai and other CIAA officials after the Gen Z movement, Rai met PM Karki on Saturday and pledged to make the commission’s work on corruption probes more effective.

Since a judicial commission formed to investigate corruption by political leaders under the Gen Z demands would overlap with the constitutional jurisdiction of the CIAA, the government is considering dismissing Rai and other controversial officials.

In this context, a source said Rai met PM Karki and expressed his readiness to conduct independent investigations into corruption cases.

Rai himself was implicated in corruption linked to the Widebody aircraft purchase but allegedly shielded himself by prosecuting others. The Special Court had questioned the impartiality of the CIAA’s investigation in that case.

Rai has also faced accusations of carrying out politically motivated investigations and prosecutions at the direction of former Prime Minister KP Oli.
