Save the Nation backs out

In an apparently abrupt development, the Save the Nation party of Marich Man Singh Shrestha, the penultimate Prime Minister of the authoritarian panchayat order of yesteryear, has virtually backed out from contesting the parliamentary polls scheduled for November 13.

That move marks quite a change from Shrestha’s claim, not too long ago, that his party would contest from “many “of the 205 parliamentary constituencies, including those of Kathmandu district.

Indeed, when he talked to the Review three weeks ago, for instance, he had disclosed that he was consulting with several small parties with “similar objectives” even while underlining that it would not enter into an electoral alliance with the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) considered to be formed of the same political stock as the Save the Nation Party. When contacted for an explanation, Shrestha said, we are presently strengthening our organization. What’s the point in contesting just a few seats? “First, we should be in a position to contest all 205 seats,” he said.
