Lufthansa adds a 3rd weekly flight on Nepal route

Lufthansa German Airlines will begin a third weekly flight between Kathmandu and Frankfurt on September 18 to meet the growth in demand for the Kathmandu route.

The flight frequency has en increased even though tourists are cutting short their stay in Kathmandu mainly because of increasing pollution, Juergen Behrens, the airlines’ manager for Nepal said.

Kathmandu is being increasingly used as a transit point for hops to Pokhara, Chitwan, and other trekking routes in Nepal and Lhasa.

The flights will continue through May unlike in 1993 when the airlines operated the third flight only in the peak autumn season.

Behrens said Lufthansa will continue its weekly freighter service despite a drop in the demand for Nepalese carpets in Germany and the rest of Europe.

The demand for carpets has peaked with two million square meters in warehouses in Germany and another million in Nepal, he said.

Lufthansa has also pointed Himalayan Tours and Travels as its general sales agent for Western Nepal and Pokhara, the second most important tourist destination in Nepal.
