Will he be transformed?

EDITORIAL

Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda appeared in Daura-Surwal while taking the oath-taking ceremony after he was appointed the Prime Minister. It was a surprise for many. Earlier, saying that the national dress was worn by the kings, therefore, the Maoists reject to wear it. Later, the national dress Daura-Surwal and Gunou-Cholee were removed from the national dress code, which was highly opposed by the Nepali population. Leaders from major political parties – Nepali Congress and also the UML, among others – always wore Daura-Surwal in formal functions. Also, Maoist leaders – vice president Nandakishor Pun, then speakers Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Agni Sapkota were always seen in Durwa-Surwal in formal functions. Yet, Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai continued to neglect Nepali national dress on formal occasions also. However, Bhattarai, during his visit to Western Nepal, had clad Daura-Surwal. After the oath-taking ceremony, Prachanda is not seen again in Daura-Surwal. When he wore the national dress, people commended him for accepting the national dress. There is no political or personal loss for him and his party by recognizing the national dress, rather, a change in the Maoist leaders was appreciated by many.

Understandably, the Maoist party is on the path of declining its strength. In every election, it has become a continuously declining force. If such a trend will continue, in the next elections, it will become further weak. It makes clear that voters have not accepted the Maoist agendas. Moreover, the party leadership’s involvement in commission and corruption has contributed to intensifying the party’s unpopularity. Prachanda, however, has said that this time, i.e. in two and a half years’ tenure, he will work much and speak less. Maybe, Prachanda believed that this is the last opportunity he has received. This opportunity he got from UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli, otherwise, NC had rejected to offer the post of prime minister to him. UML came to rescue him personally. If Prachanda and his party will not correct their past mistakes, surely, along with him, the Maoist party will disappear from the Nepali political arena.

Whether Prachanda has understood or not that his agendas have been outdated, he should review and try to make a change immediately as he has very less time. The end of nepotism, favouritism, sycophancy, the establishment of rule of law, good governance and transparency are the basic things demanded by the voters. Besides, he felt that the present political system has become very expensive and the system is non-functional, if he wants to upgrade himself to the position of a statesman, he has to review the present political system and introduce a sustainable system favourable to Nepal.
