Kathmandu, 7 July: When the name of someone is listed on an international platform for the good work done nationally or internationally, the country of that person undoubtedly takes pride. That is indeed a prestige of the country and prestige for all. It is a piece of happy news to see that the late Shanti Mishra, the first woman professor of Tribhuvan University, the first Chief and founding librarian of the Tribhuvan University Central Library, and the first Nepali woman who obtained a Master’s Degree in Library Science, is listed in a timeline of women in library science throughout the world. Her name is number 11 in the list of 29 top women librarians worldwide from 1796 to 2019. According to the list, Cecilia Cleve is the first female librarian who became a librarian in Sweden in 1796.
Shanti Mishra is known as the creator of Tribhuvan University Central Library by international standards, making it the most prestigious institution in Nepal. She was also a writer, translator, and novelist. She has three books in English and two in Nepali as a co-author with her husband, Narayan Prasad Mishra, including the first book in library science. Her book “Voice of Truth: the Challenges Struggles of a Nepalese Woman” was one among the ten best-sellers books when that was published in 1994. She was born on the day of Harishayani Yekadashi, the 11th day of the lunar calendar, the day of God Narayan, which falls on July 11 (Asar 26) this year. She passed away on May 15, 2019.
