A good, if belated, start

From what we have come to learn, for the very first time His Majesty’s Government conveyed its views and assessment of all aspects of the Bhutanese refugee situation in an effective, competent manner to the international community.

This happened during the recent Kathmandu visit of Ambassador Jakob Esper Larson, chairman of the executive committee of the UNHCR, when he was briefed on the Nepalese position by Prime Minister Share Bahadur Deuba and Foreign Minister Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani.

Although the official media, quoting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, did not go beyond disclosing that “the problem of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal was discussed extensively”, it has come to our knowledge that the briefing provided to Ambassador Larson was very effective in neutralising the slanted perspective that that had been providing him in New Delhi and Thimbu, the two neighboring capitals that he visited before arriving in Kathmandu.
