One rhino killed at Chitwan National Park

A female adult rhinoceros has died after being shot by Nepali Army personnel in Chitwan National Park.

According to the park’s conservation officer and information officer, Avinash Thapa Magar, the incident occurred on Thursday when a patrolling army team was attacked by the rhino, prompting them to open fire in self-defense.

The patrol team, mobilized from the Sehari Security Post under the New Gorakh Battalion assigned for park security, was on routine patrol when a female rhino accompanied by a sub-adult calf suddenly attacked one of the soldiers.

Despite firing 14 rounds into the air to drive the rhino away, it did not retreat. To rescue the attacked soldier, the team fired two additional rounds, which struck the animal.

The approximately 24-year-old female rhino died on the spot after being hit by the bullets.
