Loan shark victims in Kathmandu again

By Our Reporter

Loan shark victims have arrived in Kathmandu again after their problems were not solved even by the committee formed to solve them.

Some of the victims walked for 23 days to arrive in the capital. Many of them developed wounds in their feet for walking barefoot for days.

When the government authorities were not available to hear their plight, a group of them managed to enter the premises of the parliament building in New Baneshwor prompting the government to impose a ban on the movements of pedestrians on the footpaths adjoining the parliament building complex in New Baneshwor, around Singha Durbar and the Baluwatar residence of the Prime Minister.

After the loan shark victims occupied the Exhibition Centre in Bhrikuti Mandap, organisers of a fair were compelled to build separate sheds for the loan shark victims.

However, it is a big irony that the government decided to prohibit the commoners from passing through the footpaths instead of addressing the problems of loan shark victims. The decision to ban footpaths looks authoritarian in nature.

After a group of microfinance victims entered the parliament building in New Baneshwar on Monday, the government decided to prohibit commuters from walking along the pavements siding the Singha Durbar, Baluwatar and Baneshwar.

After a group of about 50 microfinance victims entered the Federal Parliament Building on Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs removed the 32 security personnel from duty, including a police inspector, who was assigned to the external security of the Parliament Building.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha called an emergency meeting of security agency heads on Monday evening to discuss the intrusion of the microfinance victims.
