Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal is a player who can perfectly perform double roles. He is self-centred and is nobody’s man. PM Dahal’s present mission is to retain power by serving Indian interests, organizing a planned loot in the national coffer; and ensuring the future of his family members and relatives.
In the process of pleasing India, during his long-awaited visit to Delhi, he didn’t pronounce any of the issues related to Nepal’s interests, including the border disputes between Nepal and India, thinking that such issues would irritate his counterpart in Delhi. Delhi has thought that PM Dahal is an India-comfortable leader. PM Dahal ended the partnership with the UML and joined hands with the Nepali Congress under Indian instruction. Later, the UML-NC alliance in Koshi Province was also broken under Indian instruction. Therefore, even a layman can assume that the present Dahal-Deuba partnership has been prolonged following Indian instruction. It is not odd, both the leaders are India-confidant.
In action, the two-India-confident leaders’ role is different. Both the leaders are organizing a daylight loot in the country by developing a high-level mechanism. Whether it is the Ncell episode of manipulating government revenue or the smuggling of gold to India via Nepal, the high-ranking leaders are directly involved in planned networking. According to reports, within one year, two quintals of illegal gold have been confiscated by different government agencies. Within one month, around 30 kgs of gold have been confiscated by the government agencies. Even after confiscating such a large quantity of gold, the trend of illegal imports of gold has not been stopped. We cannot say but assume a large quantity of gold is being successfully arrived in the Nepali soil and sent to the Indian market. According to the statement of one gold porter, who was arrested by the Police, it was the fourth time he was carrying gold from Dubai and this time, he was arrested. Clearly, he successfully passed the gold three times in the past. Gold smuggled to Nepal is not for local consumption but it is sent to India through different Nepal-India border points. We can assume, how India is losing revenue from the gold smuggling via Nepal. Prime Minister Dahal is the executive chief of the government. If he wishes, immediately he can stop gold smuggling. Until now, the real owner of the gold has not been identified as only the porters and workers have been arrested. If PM Dahal wants, he can reach out to the real owner and end permanently such practices taking place via Nepal to India.
Be that as it may, it has been proved that keeping open the international border is not good for both the countries, Nepal and India. Today, gold is being smuggled, maybe, tomorrow, some international terrorist groups misuse Nepali soil against India. Therefore, it would be wise for both countries to regulate the international border.
